services: TRIMMING AND GLAZING

Don’t have time to process your own pots? We can help! We offer services like trimming (reducing the clay weight and refining the piece) and glazing (per your glaze selection and style). Pricing for these services is based on time and only includes use of our NHCP studio clay/glazes. Payment for clay and firings will be assessed and taken at the end of each studio session. We accept cash, check or debit/credit. Large scale works (over 10 inches in any given direction) will need to be considered/priced on an individual basis.

CLAY BODIES

We carry clays that are mixed, pugged and de-aired by our staff, and are re-processed to eliminate as much waste as possible. Why? Because our clay has been tested to fit our studio glazes and produces dependable outcomes which lead to happy clay makers. Costs for firing commercial clay and/or glazes are listed below. Commercial clay bodies and glazes are welcome if distributor information is provided. We recommend these two distributors for clay purchases: Kentucky Mudworks and Krueger Pottery.

This chart breaks down the cost of clay and associated fees for a 25 lb bag of clay. If a student brings their own commercial clay or glaze, they can assess the cost of the firings for their work. Test firings are for △6 commercial glaze and compatibility tests only, and each student must create their own test tiles and have them bisqued prior to use. If you have questions about clay or glazes, feel free to email Mitzi Davis at nhclayproject@gmail.com.

STUDIO GLAZES

Our studio provides a diverse range of △6 studio glazes that have been tested for fit and stability. They are hand-mixed in our studio and are microwave/dishwasher safe after firing. We have a display of our glazes that each participant can select to customize each of their individual works. Our staff does a basic layering of each glaze as part of the services we offer, but participants can also return for a future class session to glaze their own works.

Commercial glazes can give a wider range of glaze diversity and are allowed but should still be tested with our clay bodies to make sure there are no glaze fit or compatibility issues. Glazes must be lead free and have appropriate labels to gain approval for use. While we have a glaze pantry, it can only be utilized in our specialty workshops or by our resident artists. We do not allow handmade glazes or access to our glaze chemical pantry during classes. Our kilns are communal, and results need to be stable and have as little influence on others’ work in the kiln as possible.

kiln FIRINGs

All works produced in our general classes are fired in our electric kilns to cone △6. While we have alternative kilns for different firing results, those can only be utilized in our specialty workshops or by our resident artists.

STORAGE

Individual clay/glaze, tools or supplies must be transported to and from each studio session. We cannot guarantee storage space for individual projects, and each participant should plan their work session accordingly. NHCP will also not be responsible for any unclaimed pottery, clay, tools or supplies left behind two weeks after the last attended class date.
