The cup, one of ceramics more iconic images, has been used as a metaphor, a sculptural element, a sculptural foundation and a functional daily piece of dinnerware. In an effort to encourage the public and local community to build a relationship with clay and support national clay artists, we partner with New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art (NHGCA) to present an annual juried cup show, FILLED UP. Whether you choose to fill your cups with beverages, food, pencils, or ideology, this exhibition features over 100 handmade creations from artists across the country.

  • FILLED UP 4 is open to all US residents, 16 years of age or older. Entries must have been completed within 3 years of the entry deadline. Ceramics vessel forms (cups, mugs, yunomis, tankards, tumblers, goblets, tea bowls, etc.), ceramic sculptures, and ceramic installation works are eligible. Mixed media works are eligible only if clay is the primary medium, 70% of submission. Individual components of ceiling suspended or wall mounted works should not exceed 20 pounds. All entries must be original works and available for the duration of the exhibit. Works not gallery-ready or not exhibiting good craftsmanship, may be omitted from the exhibit. Accepted works cannot be substituted; those differ significantly from the entry images or suffer from poor presentation will be disqualified.

    Notification of accepted works will begin October 20, 2023 through email (please make sure nhclayproject@gmail.com is in your contacts and not in spam). Artist's contracts and label information are included within application, so please ensure accuracy. There will be two celebrations for the exhibition: the opening where the juror (TBD) will reveal awards and give an artist lecture and a reception in December 2023, where we will begin to allow visitors removing purchased works from the gallery in time for the holidays. We will shift the exhibition footprint until all the work has sold. NHGCA will be closed November 22-26, 2023 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. If any pandemic or natural disaster were to cause temporary closing of the university art gallery or disruption of this campus event, this juried exhibition will be moved to a fully online exhibition.

  • $15.00 for up to 3 submitted works. The entry fee will be donated to NHCP to support its mission to foster an environment that supports the investigation of new ideas and work in the ceramic arts. Application fee should be submitted online with completed application; without this, applications will not be processed. The submitted entry form signifies the artist's understanding and agreement with the terms and conditions stated herein.

    Overflowing Award: $150 given to the Best Cup in Show
    To The Brim Award: $50 given to five Honorable Mentioned Cups in Show

    All accepted entries will be eligible for the “Overflowing” and “To the Brim” awards. Artists need not be present to win to receive monetary rewards. Awards will be determined through the Juror and revealed during the opening of the exhibition.

  • Artists may submit 1-3 original works which have been completed in the last three years. Each entry requires a JPEG image and the following description: Title; Materials (type of clay, other media, and firing method); Dimensions (H x W x D inches); Year Completed; Price (or NFS). Artists may submit up 1-2 images for each entry. Images must be sized appropriately at a resolution of 72 dpi and 12 inches (864 pixels) on its longest side (8x12 inches or 576x864 pixels is typical accepted image size). Files should be labeled First Name_Last Name_Entry Number (e.g. John Smith would be John_Smith_2.jpg). For included detail images, indicate this on the image file labels as Entry Number + Alphabet (John_Smith_2A.jpg).

  • The artist is responsible for the shipping and insurance of the work to and from the location. Works should be easily identified and labeled with the shipping form included in acceptance packet. Shipped works must be sent in an easily reusable container/packaging and include prepaid return shipping. Artwork with no return shipping label will be considered a donation to NHCP for future fundraising sales. Works should be shipped to arrive by the dates listed below, but earlier shipments are fine. Hand-deliveries are welcome. No artwork may be removed from the exhibition by the artist until after the conclusion of the show.

  • All reasonable care will be exercised with handling, storing and installing works of art submitted for the exhibition. NHGCA will provide insurance coverage for all artwork while on the gallery premises; however, the hosting organizations assume no responsibility and shall not be held liable for damages of any kind which may occur while work is in transit.

    Works are encouraged to be for sale. We want the public and local community to build a relationship with clay, and this starts with bringing vessels into the home; however, works can also be listed as NFS (Not for Sale). NHGCA will handle sales, and a commission of 35% will be deducted from each sold entry. Please include this percentage with your listed price.

    Works selected cannot be substituted and must be available for the duration of the show. Participating artists are responsible for all costs related to shipping, delivery, and return of works. Unless hand-delivered, works must be carefully packed and shipped in a reusable box or crate, including packing materials. NHGCA will provide insurance coverage for all artworks while on the gallery premises. Insurance for artworks while in transit to and from NHGCA is the responsibility of the artist. NHGCA, staff, and volunteers will not be held liable for any damage or loss that occurs during transit. On acceptance, NHGCA and NHCP retain the right to reproduce images and photograph all works displayed in the exhibition, regardless of copyright, for promotional or educational purposes. Images may be used for documentation, sales, promotion and publicity. Neither NHGCA nor the NHCP can be held responsible for the effects of any pandemic or natural disaster resulting in the temporary closing of the NHGCA.
